 The function of the steering system




The function of the steering system is to convert the rotary movement of the steering wheel into an angular turning of the front wheels. It also multiplies the driver’s effort by leverage or mechanical advantage so that it makes easier to turn the wheels. Steering knuckles carry the front wheels that run on the ball or tapered roller bearings. Hence, the steering system also must absorb some part of road shocks and prevent them from transmitting to the driver.



     When the driver turns the steering wheel, it transmits the resulting motion to a steering tube. This tube rotates inside the steering column and transmits the motion further to the steering gear-set fitted at the end of the steering tube. Steering gear set changes the direction of motion and multiplies the twisting force according to the gear ratio. The output or roller shaft rotates and moves the itman arm. It further transmits the motion to the steering knuckle thru’ the relay rod, the idler arm, tie rods, and steering arms

The clutch is a mechanical device, which is used to connect a driving shaft to driven shaft so that they can be engaged and disengaged at the will of the operator. They used to start and stop a part of a system without stopping remaining parts of the power transmission system. They are used mostly in automobiles. The clutch allows to insert a gear system (gearbox) between engine and wheels, facilitate gear changing when the engine is running. Other applications of clutch: Torque limiting clutch in the electric screwdriver, bicycles pedal ratcheting.



Function of the Clutch :

  1. Function of transmitting the torque from the engine to the drivetrain.ý
  2. Smoothly deliver the power from the engine to enable smooth vehicle movement.
  3. Perform quietly and to reduce drive-related vibration.
  4. Protect the drivetrain when given the inappropriate use. Given the situation, the Exedy clutch will fail when giventhe inappropriate use inturn to protect the rest of the drivetrain, similar to the function of an electric fuse.

   


Requirements of a good clutch :


  1. The clutch should be able to transmit 1.25 to 1.50 times the maximum engine torque.
  2. The clutch material should have good coefficient of function.
  3. Lot of heat is generated due to the relative motion between the flywheel, pressure plate and clutch plate during clutch operation. This heat needs to be quickly dissipated, otherwise high temperature can damage clutch components.
  4. The clutch should have low moment of inertia, otherwise the clutch will keep spinning at high speed even during gear changing.
  5. Vibration and Jerk absorption. The clutch should be able to take up sudden jerks encountered when the clutch plate comes in contact with the rotating flywheel.
  6. The clutch should be dynamically balanced or it will lead to vibrations at high speeds.
  7. The operation of the clutch pedal should be easy for the operator and not tiresome, especially for operating

                    A four-stroke engine is an internal combustion engine in which the piston completes four  separate strokes while turning the crankshaft. A stroke refers to the full travel of the piston along the cylinder, in either direction. The four separate strokes are termed: Intake: Also known as induction or suction.




Comparison of 4-Stroke & 2-Stroke Cycle Engine


  • 4-STROKE ENGINE
  1. All events are completed in 4-strokesof the piston or 2 revolution of crank shaft i.e.,there is one power stroke for every 2 revolution of crank shaft.
  2. Contains valves and the valves are actuated by cam mechanism. 
  3. The charge is directly admitted into the engine cylinder. 
  4. Torque is not uniform, requires heavier flywheel.
  5. Volumetric efficiency is more due to  more time for suction.
  6. Thermal efficiency is high.

      4-Stroke & 2-Stroke Cycle


  • 2-STROKE ENGINE 
  1. All events are completed in 2-strokes of the piston or 1 revolution of crankshaft i.e., there is one power stroke for every revolution of crank shaft. 
  2. Doesn't have valves and only ports are provided. There ports are closed by piston. 
  3. The charge first enters the crankease, and therefore crank is made gas tight.

  5. Volumetric efficiency is low due to lesser time for suction. 
  6. Thermal efficiency is low.

All the Difference in The World

Every Sunday morning I take a light jog around a park near my home.  There’s a lake located in one corner of the park.  Each time I jog by this lake, I see the same elderly woman sitting at the water’s edge with a small metal cage sitting beside her.

This past Sunday my curiosity got the best of me, so I stopped jogging and walked over to her.  As I got closer, I realized that the metal cage was in fact a small trap.  There were three turtles, unharmed, slowly walking around the base of the trap.  She had a fourth turtle in her lap that she was carefully scrubbing with a spongy brush.

“Hello,” I said.  “I see you here every Sunday morning.  If you don’t mind my nosiness, I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.”

She smiled.  “I’m cleaning off their shells,” she replied.  “Anything on a turtle’s shell, like algae or scum, reduces the turtle’s ability to absorb heat and impedes its ability to swim.  It can also corrode and weaken the shell over time.”

“Wow!  That’s really nice of you!” I exclaimed.

She went on: “I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out.  It’s my own strange way of making a difference.”

“But don’t most freshwater turtles live their whole lives with algae and scum hanging from their shells?” I asked.

“Yep, sadly, they do,” she replied.

I scratched my head.  “Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent?  I mean, I think your efforts are kind and all, but there are fresh water turtles living in lakes all around the world.  And 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells.  So, no offense… but how exactly are your localized efforts here truly making a difference?”

The woman giggled aloud.  She then looked down at the turtle in her lap, scrubbed off the last piece of algae from its shell, and said, “Sweetie, if this little guy could talk, he’d tell you I just made all the difference in the world.”


The moral:  You can change the world – maybe not all at once, but one person, one animal, and one good deed at a time.  Wake up every morning and pretend like what you do makes a difference.  It does.

A Fairy Tale Story: The Poor Family




Once upon a time there lived a family of 5. The dad, the mum and there 3 children Mia, Joel and Gabby. The family was poor. They only had the money for 5 groceries. They had no money to take the children to school. All the rest of the family members were poor as well.

The family slept on the streets. As the families walked past they took no notice. The used leaves for there beds and pillows. They had apples and bananas only.




One day a child took notice. She asked,"What are you doing here?"
The mother replied, "We have no home we are poor we have no house." The child ran to her mother and told her all about it. The family came and gave them money. They cheered for joy. They had the money for everything they wished. They got a house and they took there children to school. They got groceries and shared some money with the other family members. It was happy to know that they were not poor anymore. They were not rich. They were in between. They all lived happily ever after.
